Ahmed Omar Kaseb

Egyptian oncologist Ahmed Omar Kaseb has built a globally influential career confronting one of medicine’s most difficult challenges: liver cancer. A Cairo University medical graduate, he is the John E. and Dorothy J. Harris Professor in Gastrointestinal Cancer Research and Professor of Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. His work connects laboratory discovery, biomarkers, immunotherapy, and designed clinical trials to improve treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma. Kaseb has led major multidisciplinary research programs, served on national cancer committees, and advanced international collaboration across continents. He also maintains meaningful links with Egypt, sharing expertise and encouraging research partnerships. His journey celebrates Egyptian scientific excellence translated into better cancer research, stronger cooperation, and hope for patients worldwide.

Ahmed Omar Kaseb

Professor Ahmed Omar Kaseb represents an inspiring example of Egyptian medical expertise achieving meaningful global influence. A physician-scientist whose career is devoted to gastrointestinal cancers, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma, he works at the point where laboratory discovery, clinical research, and patient care meet. His contribution is especially significant because liver cancer remains one of the most difficult cancers to treat, demanding cooperation across oncology, surgery, radiology, pathology, immunology, and public health.

Kaseb graduated from Cairo University School of Medicine in 1996 before continuing his postgraduate training in the United States. He completed internal medicine training in Detroit and a medical oncology fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital. He subsequently joined The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, one of the world’s foremost cancer institutions, where he rose through the academic ranks. Today, he holds the endowed position of John E. and Dorothy J. Harris Professor in Gastrointestinal Cancer Research and is a professor of gastrointestinal medical oncology.

At MD Anderson, Kaseb has helped build a deeply collaborative approach to liver cancer. He founded and directs an interdisciplinary hepatocellular carcinoma research group, bringing specialists together around a disease that rarely yields to a single form of treatment. His research explores biomarkers, immune responses, targeted approaches, and combinations of systemic and locoregional therapies. He has served as principal investigator on clinical trials evaluating immunotherapy before surgery and other promising strategies designed to reduce recurrence and improve outcomes.

His leadership extends beyond individual studies. Kaseb has held senior responsibilities in major research programs supported by the United States National Cancer Institute and National Institutes of Health. He has participated in national hepatobiliary research committees and has led international biomarker collaborations linking institutions across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas. As editor-in-chief of the Journal of Hepatocellular Carcinoma, he also helps shape how new knowledge in the field is reviewed, communicated, and made useful to clinicians and researchers worldwide.

Recognition of his work includes an International Leadership Award, a Fulbright Scholar Award, an American Society of Clinical Oncology merit award, and repeated recognition from MD Anderson for the quality and productivity of his contributions. Yet his influence is measured most clearly through the research teams he connects, the younger investigators he mentors, and the clinical questions he helps move from the laboratory toward patients.

Kaseb’s relationship with Egypt remains an important part of his professional story. His recent engagements with Egyptian universities have included scientific lectures, discussions of joint cancer research, and efforts to develop sustainable partnerships, training opportunities, and exchanges for emerging researchers. These activities reflect a valuable form of global success: expertise acquired internationally being used to strengthen scientific connections with home.

For Egyptian of the Week, Ahmed Omar Kaseb represents the quiet but far-reaching influence of an Egyptian physician working against a disease that affects families across national boundaries. His career demonstrates that global leadership in medicine is not only about personal distinction. It is about creating multidisciplinary communities, asking difficult questions, translating scientific evidence into better treatment, and preparing others to continue the work.

In an era when cancer research increasingly depends on cooperation across disciplines and borders, his work shows how one committed clinician-scientist can create networks that multiply impact, accelerate discovery, and keep patients’ needs at the center of meaningful medical progress.

Through his leadership in liver-cancer research, clinical trials, international collaboration, and mentorship, Kaseb carries Egyptian excellence into one of the world’s most consequential medical arenas. His achievements offer pride, but also possibility: proof that an Egyptian medical education can become the foundation for research and partnerships capable of improving cancer care around the world.
